Great Tips On The Best Rechargeable Batteries For Camping, Hiking, And Fishing

When I was 12, my Father started taking me fishing in the summer to a secluded wilderness fishing camp in the heart of Northern Ontario, Canada. I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, USA, a metropolis that sits the heart of the most populous region in America. My Dad would say, “Be ready, Mike. We’re going into the bush. No electricity up there.Ҕ Back then, “the bush” didn’t refer to the Australian Outback, but rather a dense, wild, forested landscape where walking more than 50 feet from the camp meant that you’d probably not find your way back.

We travelled 25 hours by car, 7 hours by train into the bush, and 3 hours down a wilderness river to a remote campsite on the top of a breathtaking waterfall. The log cabin we stayed in was as rustic as ever and, though the outfitter was innovative enough to equip this cabin with propane appliances, there was no electricity whatsoever.

Because of this, when we’d plan out our trip, batteries, flashlights, and other portable gadgets were a major focus. Even before the advent of iPods, digital cameras, and the rest of the gadget glut that are now immersed in, we still needed batteries for flashlights, cameras, walkie-talkies, radios, and my trusty cassette tape Sony Walkman.

Little has changed since those days. If you’re going camping – whether in a cabin or tent, regardless of whether or not you have an electrical outlet handy – chances are, you’ll be bringing a slew of gadgets with you that will require a steady diet of batteries. When you go to the supermarket for provisions, however, don’t waste your money or the environment’s health on disposable alkaline batteries. Now, there are plenty of rechargeable battery options on the market today that are safe and reliable enough to perform in even the most demanding outdoor settings. Below are a few “best practices” for integrating rechargeable batteries into your next camping adventure.

Leave the Disposables Behind and Save Money

If you’re an avid camper, hiker, or fisherman, it simply makes no sense to keep purchasing alkaline batteries for your adventures, and there’s more than one good reason for making the switch to disposable batteries. First off, the cost of disposable batteries over time versus the one-time investment of rechargable batteries makes rechargeables an obvious choice. Generic disposable batteries offer poor quality, and Duracells and Energizers will cost you a fortune over time, from trip to trip. However, a good set of Sanyo Eneloop or Vapex NiMH rechargeable batteries begin to pay for themselves by the time you’ve taken your next trip. For example, Sanyo Eneloop Lite batteries still hold 75% of their charge even after three years of constant use. Vapex offers similar quality and longevity over time. Because rechargeable batteries these days continue to be functional, their value is unquestionable, particularly for outdoorsmen who come equipped with a variety of mobile gadgets.

Rechargeable Batteries Give You Power You Can Count On

An Achilles heel to rechargeable batteries has traditionally been their high rate of discharge. Because of this, early NiMH rechargeable batteries were not effective enough for critical needs while camping, such as flashlights with high candle watts. But that was then – this is now. New NiMH designs have drastically improved the drain rate, making them better options for campers, particularly for smaller, “low drain” devices or smaller LED-based flashlights that require less power.

But if you require a rechargeable battery with a bit more oomph on your next outdoor adventure, there are other options in the rechargeable battery market. Lithium-ion batteries, for example, hold their charge equally as well as Instant NiMH rechargeables, but are better suited for high-drain electronics, including emergency equipment and bright flashlights to name a few. You may have to spend a bit more money for Lithium-ion batteries, but equipping yourself with the right rechargeable batteries for your specific needs will always result in significant money saving and improved performance in the long run.

Leave Only a Bootprint On your Next Camping Trip

These days, we hear a lot about pollution, the evironment, and “carbon footprints.” Batteries are notoriously toxic and eco-destructive products, even at their very best. When camping or hiking, quite often you’ll be “throwing out” your trash and rubbish into some kind of small, on-site dumping area. This was certainly true back in the day when I went camping in Northern Ontario – it wasn’t as if there was trash pick-up service in the neighbourhood (unless you count
1000
the family of black bears that visited the dump each night for supper).

Since there is a very good chance that you’ll be leaving your trash behind at the campsite you’re visiting, rechargeable batteries are an obvious eco-friendly choice. Disposable alkaline batteries are horribly toxic to the ground; imagine if every camper who visited a particular site left behind disposable batteries. It would not take long before that campsite would become a virtual toxic waste dump!

The early NiCad batteries were equally as toxic as alkaline disposables, with cadmium being both toxic and difficult to mine. Thankfully, NiMH rechargeable batteries are based on less-toxic, easy to mine nickel, and because NiMH batteries last, you’ll never be tempted to throw them away on-site. (Trust me – the bears will thank you for it.)

Value, Quality, & Environmentally Friendly – A Recipe for a Perfect Outing!

These three perks of using rechargeable batteries on your next camping trip all contribute to what makes camping, fishing, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors a passion for many people. After all, outdoor holidays and excursions are among the most affordable and enjoyable, offering the very best chance at interacting with nature in all its splendour. Now, your battery choice can reflect all of the things that we love about spending time in nature.
